STALK
THE TAHR.
Tahr hunting in the Southern Alps for those who hunt with reverence. Eight expeditions. May through June.
AN ANIMAL
THAT REQUIRES
THE MOUNTAIN.
The Himalayan tahr was released into the Southern Alps in 1904 and has, in the century since, become the most coveted mountain trophy in the southern hemisphere. They live where the rock is bare and the air is thin — between fifteen hundred and twenty-four hundred metres, on faces few hunters ever see.
A bull tahr in winter coat — black mane, copper saddle, ivory horns curving back over a heavy neck — is, by any measure, one of the great prizes in international hunting. Earning one is a different matter.
THE EXPEDITION
THE COUNTRY
Helicopter or 4WD into private high-country station leases. Tussock basins, glacial moraine, rock bluffs — the genuine alpine.
THE CAMP
Spike camp on the tops. Single-hunter alpine tents, a heated mess shelter, hot meals on the stove, room to dry kit between days on the hill.
THE GUIDE
Mike Lawry leads every trip personally. Twenty seasons in the Southern Alps, NZPHGA certified.
